KIMBERLY — Mortimer Jordan pitcher Bailey Murphy was back in the circle Tuesday, and back in top form.
Visiting Hoover was held by Murphy to just four scattered hits, plus a single run scored without benefit of a base hit, as the Blue Devils won 4-1 on Tuesday in the regular-season finale for both teams.
The Buccaneers scored their lone run in the fourth inning when Mary Catherine Nichols reached on a walk, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly by Carley Sewell.
The Devils struck in the first inning, as leadoff hitter Shelby Maze scored on a sacrifice fly by Murphy. Brittany Collier followed by grounding out, bringing home Kristen Putnam.
Jordan tacked on two more runs in the third, as Brooke Hill walked and then scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch. Maze singled, came to third on the wild pitch and scored on Collier’s base hit.
The Devils had more chances to score, but left the bases loaded in the third and sixth innings.
Murphy recorded four strikeouts and one walk as she went the distance.
Katie Manak (4-2) also struck out four, but gave up six hits and two walks in the loss.
Maze was 2-for-3 at the plate for Jordan (20-14). Jenna Olszewski was 2-for-3 for Hoover (25-23).
The sixth-ranked Devils host the Class 5A Area 12 tournament beginning Thursday evening. They will play No. 7 Curry in the second game of the night at about 6:30, after fifth-rated Hayden takes on Walker at 4:30 in first-round play.
