Baseball: Pinson Valley 2, Gardendale 1

PINSON — Scott Falkinburg lined a single to right field to bring home what turned out to be the winning run, as Pinson Valley edged Gardendale 2-1 in the Indian's second game of the day Tuesday.

Falkinburg's fifth-inning hit scored Joseph Downing, the courtesy runner for catcher Austin Little, who had reached first on an error. Downing had moved into scoring position on a bunt and a ground out.

The Rockets got on the scoreboard first in the third inning, when John Michael Matthews drew a lead-off walk, moved to second on a bunt, and then to third and home on wild pitches by Indians starter Colby Wingard.

Pinson tied the game in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Gracen Armstrong that scored Downing, again running for Little after the catcher singled to lead off the inning.

Wingard only gave up two hits in the game, one of them a double by Joseph Calvert, who was then cut down by an inning-ending double play.

Starter Chris Walton worked four innings in a no-decision outing for Gardendale. He allowed three hits and no walks while striking out five. Reliever Carter Burns took the loss, allowing two hits in two innings.

The game was the second of doubleheaders for both teams, though against other opponents, and in Gardendale's case at two different sites. The Rockets easily handled Minor 17-0 earlier on Tuesday at their home field, while the Indians routed Center Point 23-1, scoring 18 runs in the first inning — the third most runs ever scored in one inning by a team in AHSAA history.
