Baseball: Mortimer Jordan edges Corner 8-7 in extra-inning tournament championship game

KIMBERLY — Walker McCleney’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning brought home the game-winning run, as Mortimer Jordan hung on to defeat Corner 8-7 in extra innings in Thursday’s championship game of Jordan’s annual spring break baseball tournament.

The Blue Devils had tied the back-and-forth affair on a Garrett Suchey run-scoring double in the bottom of the seventh, only to see the Yellow Jackets take the lead back in their half of the eighth, when a Seth Merchant RBI single brought in Blake Byrd.

Jordan reliever Nathan got the win with 1-1/3 innings’ work. Starter Ty Miller went 6-1/3 innings, striking out five but issuing six walks. Chris Huff got the loss in relief for Corner; he came in after Daniel Russell gave up the double to Suchey in the seventh. Starter Jackson Tavel  allowed six hits and seven walks.

Nathan Stover was 2-for-4 in hitting and scored three Devils runs. Josh Walker was 3-for-5 for the Jackets.

Corner 16, Hayden 2 (5 innings): In the second semifinal game Thursday, the Jackets ran roughshod over the Wildcats.

Jack Robbins was 4-for-4 for Vorner and scored three runs. Kerry Smith was 2-for-4 and drove in three, while Dillon McCaleb, Seth Merchant and Cody Gilbert were each 2-for-3.

Blake Byrd pitched all five innings, striking out eight.

Patrick Hargett was 2-for-2 and scored one Wildcat run.

Mortimer Jordan 8, Pleasant Grove 2: In the other semifinal, Orion Recke was 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs for the Blue Devils, who put up five runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back.

Nathan Stover went 2-for-3 with a run scored, and designated hotter Wes Crawford brought hom a run on a sacrifice fly.

Suchey worked five innings as the starter, striking out six while giving up one hit and no earned runs. Daniel Jones got the loss for the Spartans.
