Baseball: No. 9 Pinson Valley 4, Pleasant Grove 2 (10 innings)

PLEASANT GROVE — Pinson Valley had to work much longer than usual, but scored two runs in the top of the 10th inning to defeat Pleasant Grove 4-2 in the Thursday semifinals of the Jefferson County Schools Baseball Tournament.

Josh Hines hit a lead-off double for the ninth-ranked Indians, and scored when Jason Little hit into an error. Austin Little then singled to right, bringing home Robert St. John (running for Jason Little). That was all the lead the Indians needed, as they held the Spartans to a single in the bottom of the 10th.

The Spartans scored twice in the second inning on two singles and an error. Pinson got one run back when Hines doubled, and scored on a Jason Little hit. They tied the game in the seventh when Jared McCurdy drew a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Hines hit.

Hines was 3-for-5 for the night with two doubles, Gracen Armstrong was 2-for-5 with a double, and Zac Ray was 2-for-5. McCurdy was 2-for-4.

Wyatt Burns went seven innings in relief of starter Scott Falkinburg, who last two innings. Burns struck out six Spartan batters and gave up three hits and one walk. Colby Wingard got the save, working the 10th inning.

Pinson Valley and Gardendale will meet in the Jefferson County Championship on Monday night at 6:30, to be played at Birmingham-Southern College.
