Baseball: Corner 4, Gardendale 2

GARDENDALE — Corner came through with two runs in the top of the seventh to score a 4-2 comeback victory over Gardendale in the final day of pool play of the Jefferson County Schools Baseball Tournament.

With the score tied at 2-2, Seth Merchant led off the seventh with a hit. After Jack Robbins beat out a bunt, both Yellow Jacket runners advanced on a passed ball. Josh Walker then brought in Merchant with a hit, and Dillon McCaleb did the same for Robbins.

The Rockets had plenty of scoring chances late, with the bases loaded in both the sixth and seventh innings, but failed to score.

Cody Gilbert (3-0) went the distance for Corner, with eight hits and four walks allowed against four strikeouts. Starter Bryce Jay went six innings for Gardendale, but it was reliever Reed Elkins (0-1) who got the loss in the seventh.

The Jackets’ McCaleb was 2-for-4 for the day with an RBI, as was Blake Byrd. Chris Walton hit 2-for-4 for the Rockets (7-3).

The loss did nothing to change where the two teams will play in the bracket rounds of the county tournament. Gardendale will still play in the championship bracket after winning their other two pool games, and will host Hueytown in the semifinals on Thursday. Corner (4-7), after losing its other pool games, is relegated to the ninth-place bracket and will travel to Minor.
