HAYDEN —
Hayden held its own against Pleasant Grove for four innings, but a rash of errors in the fifth and three straight Spartan hits in the seventh were the difference in a 5-1 Wildcat loss Friday.
Tristan Davis pitched a one-hitter for Pleasant Grove, striking out 13 Hayden batters, including seven of the first 10. He had three walks and one hit batsman.
The Spartans took advantage of the miscues in the fifth, pushing runners along the base paths with a couple of sacrifice bunts.
Seth Grammer drove in one run with a double, then Matt White got on board with a single, but advanced to third on a misplayed ball at first, allowing Grammer to score. White then came home on an errant throw on Joe Hudson’s ground ball to shortstop.
Pleasant Grove tacked on two more runs with a Colby Quinn hit, a double by White and a hit by Hudson. White was gunned down at home plate with a rifle-shot throw by Wildcat center fielder Clay Hogeland, saving another run.
Drew Mayfield had Hayden’s only hit of the night in the third inning, but was thrown out as he attempted to score to end the inning.
Josh Helms got on base to lead off the fifth for Hayden (2-2) after being hit by a pitch. He then scored when Hogeland hit into an error at shortstop, and advanced on another errant throw by the catcher.
Helms went the distance on the mound for the Cats, giving up five hits and three walks with three earned runs, plus one strikeout.
