Baseball: Mortimer Jordan 3-13, Pleasant Grove 1-1

PLEASANT GROVE — Garrett Suchey had the game of his life Tuesday, missing hitting for the cycle by just a single as Mortimer Jordan swept Pleasant Grove in a doubleheader, winning 3-1 and 13-1, the latter in five innings.

Suchey smashed a double, a triple and a grand slam homer in the second game, driving in six run in total. That came after hitting a double and scoring a run in the opener.

Starting pitcher Orion Recke struck out 11 Spartan batters in the first game, He allowed four hits and one earned run in 5-2/3 innings. Reliever Ty Miller got the save.

Danek Jones got the loss for Pleasant Grove, allowing five hits and one earned run in 6-2/3 innings. Matt White hit 2-for-4 and drove in the Spartans’ only run.

In the nightcap, Suchey’s slam was part of a seven-run fifth inning that ended the game early. Miller was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Wes Crawford also it 2-for-3. He also got the win as the starting pitcher, with four strikeouts, four hits allowed and one earned run in 3-2/3 innings.

White got the loss for Pleasant Grove, giving up six runs in four innings, but only two runs were earned as the Spartans struggled defensively with five errors. Dylan Hoover was 2-for-4 at the plate, but pitched two innings of relief, yielding seven runs.

Jordan (8-0) hosts Shades Valley in a twin-bill on Thursday.
