HUFFMAN — Gardendale fought back from an early 18-point deficit to take a 1-point lead with five minutes to play, but Huffman took the lead right back and then took advantage of turnovers, as the Vikings beat the Rockets 61-52 in the first round of the Class 6A Area 12 boys basketball tournament.
Gardendale was down 53-50 with 55 seconds left and the ball, but turned the ball over two straight times.
Trey Evans led the Rockets with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Juan Jackson scored 12 points.
Derrius Carson led the Vikings with 13 points. Jermaine Morris had 12, and hit all four of his free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter. Dalon Evans added 10 points.
Gardendale ends its season with a 13-15 record.
