ONEONTA — Locust Fork rolled out to a comfortable 8-point lead at halftime, and largely held their own in the second half as they defeated Fairview 48-42 in the first round of the Class 4A Area 13 tournament at Oneonta.
Both teams struggled somewhat with shooting, with their percentages hovering around 30 percent. But the Hornets held a 22-14 advantage on the offensive boards, which led to 14 points in the paint compared to six for the Aggies. Much of that came from Kasi McMillan, who hauled in 18 rebounds — nine on each end — and scored 14 points.
Kristen Cox led the Hornets with 18 points, and also had four assists.
Julia Creel led Fairview with 15 points. Marlana Johnson had 12 points and six rebounds.
Locust fork will play Oneonta, the top-ranked team in Class 4A, in the area finals Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The Indians scalped St. Clair County 69-9 in the other first-round game Thursday.
