In track and field, the difference between winning and losing is literally hundredths of a second.
For Amanda Dean, it was six hundredths, to be precise. The Mortimer Jordan speedster finished second in the Class 5A 60-meter hurdles finals, losing to Chanel Krause of St. Paul’s Episcopal at the AHSAA Indoor Track and Field State Championships, held last Friday and Saturday at the Birmingham Crossplex.
Dean had beaten Krause by 0.21 seconds in Friday’s qualifying heats, but it was Krause who nosed out Dean at the tape when it counted. Krause’s time was 9.50 seconds, compared to Dean’s 9.56.
It was one of three events in which Dean scored points in the team standings for the Blue Devil girls. She placed fifth in the 60-meter dash, and eighth in the shot put.
Hanna McAllister was fourth for Jordan in the 400-meter dash, and the 4-by-200-meter relay team also placed fourth. The 4-by-800-meter relays team was seventh.
Those efforts were good enough to give the Devils eighth place in the overall team standings. St. Paul’s dominated the field to win another state title.
Jordan’s boys got their only team points with a sixth-place finish in the 4-by-400-meter relay. Corner won the bronze in the Class 1A-4A boys’ 4-by-200.
