Softball playoff roundup: Jordan eliminates top-ranked Hayden; Corner, Gardendale, Fultondale advance

Four local softball teams will advance to the regional tournament in Tuscaloosa next week, but the defending Class 5A champions will not be one of them.

Top-ranked Hayden picked the worst possible time to suffer its only two-game losing streak of the season, as thy fell by a 3-1 score to No. 5 Mortimer Jordan in an elimination game in the Area 12 tournament at Hayden on Friday.

Shelby Maze did the damage for the Blue Devils, as her bases-loaded triple in the fifth inning drove home all three of her team's runs. Katie Parr's single - the last base hit of her high-school career - drove in the Wildcats' lone run in the sixth.

Second-ranked Curry took the area championship with an 11-1 win over Jordan.

Class 4A Area 8: Corner routed Carbon Hill 10-0 in the elimination game to advance to the regionals, then lost to host Oak Grove 7-4 in the championship.ea 12:

Class 6A Area 12: Gardendale lost to Hewitt-Trussville 15-0 in the championship game, but it didn;t really matter for the Rockets, as they had already secured a regional berth with an easy win over Huffman in the eliminaiton game.

Class 2A Area 10: Despite a 15-5 loss to Vincent in the finals, Fultondale will advance to the regional tournament with a win in the elimination game. (We're still trying to get the details.)
