— Fultondale pulled off one of the biggest girls basketball upsets in program history, as they knocked off top-seeded Altamont 40-35 in the Class 2A Area 8 tournament Friday.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 9-0 lead, but the Knights finally caught up late in the game. But Derricka Richard sealed the victory with a 3-point play in the waning moments.
Richard led all scorers with 15 points and Alexis Lochart added nine. Aarthi Namasivayam scored 11 to lead Altamont.
The Cats take on Vincent in the area championship Saturday. If Fultondale wins, they will host a sub-regional game for the first time in program history.
In other games:
Gardendale 39, Hewitt-Trussville 35 (OT): The Huskies came back from an 8-point deficit to tie the game near the end of regulation time, but Mallorie Corbin scored four of the Rockets' six points in overtime to secure the win in Class 6A area tournament play at Huffman.
Corbin finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Joy Sadler led the Rockets with 14 points, seven boards and three blocks. Morgan McClain led the Huskies with eight points.
Gardendale (13-15) faces Huffman in the area finals.
Locust Fork 52, Fairview 48: Kasi McMillian and Brittany Hudson led a balanced attack as the
Hornets held off a furious fourth quarter rally by the Aggies at the Class 4A, Area 13 basketball tournament in Oneonta.
McMillian scored 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, and Hudson added 10 points and 14 rebounds for Locust Fork. Kimberly Horton added 11 points.
The Hornets improve to 18-8 on the season and will face top-ranked Oneonta on Saturday afternoon for the area title.
Hayden 58, Curry 16: Another big night for Katie Parr, as she tallied another double-double and scored her 1,000th career point. Parr scored 12 points and nabbed 13 rebounds, Savannah Woodward added nine points, Hannah Padgett had eight points and eight rebounds, and Brooke Meadows scored eight points for the Wildcats.
Hayden face Walker in the area finals on Saturday.
Springville 63, Pinson Valley 42: Alex Lowery scored 15 points for the Indians, as they were overwhelmed by the Tigers in the Class 5A Area 11 tourney at Center Point.
Walker 57, Mortimer Jordan 47: The Blue Devils struggled to keep pace with the Vikings, especially once Kaylan Hines and Megan Snow fouled out in the fourth quarter in the other tournament semifinal at Hayden.
Shayna Mims led Jordan with 14 points, and was 6-of-7 from the charity stripe. Hines added 13 but was held scoreless from 3-point land.
Sidney Cooper led all scorers with 23 points for Walker; she buried three treys late to seal the victory.
