— “We don't handle prosperity very well.”
That's how Gardendale boys basketball coach Ryan Griffin summed up his team's performance, in which the Rockets built up a big lead in the first half, only to see Hewitt-Trussville trim much of that advantage in the second.
But the early lead was simply too much to overcome for the Huskies, as they fell to Gardendale 71-60 in the opening round of the Class 6A Area 12 tournament Friday night at Huffman.
Quantarrius Wilson led the Rockets with 26 points and 12 rebounds; he had 11 of his points in the first two minutes of the game. Allen Williams added 11 points, all on free throws where he was 11-of-12 at the foul line. Juan Jackson and Austin Hicks scored nine points each.
Will McCollough scored 18 points and DeMarcus Kelly had 10 for Hewitt (16-12).
The Rockets take on the host Vikings on Monday in the area championship.
