Football: Mortimer Jordan 41, Moody 14

MOODY — Mortimer Jordan ran its winning streak to four game in a row, as they picked up a key regional win with a 41-14 victory at Moody Friday night.

The night belonged to Day — Tate Day, that is, who scored three rushing touchdowns for Jordan. He scored twice in the second quarter, once from 23 yards out and the other from six. He had another 6-yarder in the third.

Landon Smith opened the scoring for Jordan with a 4-yard TD run not quite three minutes into the game.

Moody answered with a 2-yard touchdown run by Dee Williams. But then Jordan went on a spell of three unanswered touchdowns — the two by Day and one by Dee Merriweather from the 2.

DeVonta Vandergrift answered for the hosts with a 13-yard run early in the second half.

Jordan’s lone rushing touchdown came on a 7-yard pass from Devlin Hodges to Logan Motte midway through the final period.

Hodges was 12-for-16 passing for the night for 171 yards; he has yet to throw an interception this season.

Merriweather ran the ball 23 times for 101 yards. Smith had seven carries for 87 yards, and also caught seven passes for 105 yards. Motte had five receptions for 66 yards.

Caleb Foshee and Brandon Spears each had eight tackles for Jordan, and Connor Hinkle added seven. Andy Herron had six tackles and a fumble recovery, the only turnover of the game for either team.

Jordan gained 438 yards for the night, 267 yards on the ground.

The win puts Jordan at 4-2 for the year and 3-2 in the region. They need a victory at home over winless Hayden next week to all but lock out a spot in the playoffs.
