GARDENDALE —
When an established, experienced eight-man football team takes on a home-school squad with only a season or two of play, the results can be predictable, and very lopsided.
Such was the case Friday night when Tabernacle Christian ran its perfect season record to 6-0, as they obliterated Wiregrass Christian of Dothan 78-0 in non-conference play.
Justin Sims led the way for a host of Torches, as coach Wayne Dabbs emptied the bench early. Sims ran 157 yards on just eight carries, including two touchdowns. He also scored on a 50-yard interception return.
Tristan Castro also scored twice, once on a 35-yard run and then on a 38-yard pass reception.
Freshman Nate Miller got plenty of reps at quarterback, and scored twice on 1-yard sneaks.
The running-clock rule was invoked midway through the second quarter, as the Torches took a 62-0 lead to the locker room at halftime.
Shiver Winchester had 14 tackles for the night, and Kent Smith added 10.
Tabernacle returns to Christian Football association play next Friday, as they travel to Northport to play North River Christian.
