GARDENDALE —
Tristan Castro had the biggest game of his career so far with six touchdowns, as Tabernacle Christian ran its season record to a perfect 5-0 Friday night with a 62-20 thrashing of Peoples Baptist Academy of McDonough, Ga. in eight-man action.
Castro scored three rushing touchdowns, two more on passes from Caleb Lindsey, and another on a 65-yard punt return. He gained 137 yards on just eight carries, and both his pass catches were for scores for 56 yards.
“He’s playing phenomenally,” Tabernacle coach Wayne Dabbs said. “He never even played offense in the second half.”
After allowing the Knights to score two early touchdowns, partly due to long passes on fourth down, the Torches unloaded for 34 straight points in the first quarter. By halftime, Tabernacle had built a 56-20 lead, and the second half was played under running-clock rules.
Lindsey made seven completions on eight pass attempts for 96 yards and three touchdowns. His other scoring toss went to Austin Hamlett for 16 yards.
Will Cousins rushed 22 yards on just two carries, but one of them was for a touchdown. Jud Sims had three receptions for 58 yards.
On defense, Michael Cox recorded eight tackles. Shiver Winchester had six tackles, three of them for losses, and recovered a fumble. JoJo Zassoda had six tackles and a fumble recovery, and Kent Smith had five tackles (two for loss) and a fumble recovery.
Tabernacle hosts Wiregrass Christian next week for homecoming.
