Softball: Mortimer Jordan sweeps tri-series against Briarwood Christian, Pisgah

KIMBERLY — Mortimer Jordan was able to get a pair of wins over Briarwood Christian and Pisgah in a Friday softball tri-series, but had to pull of some late-game heroics in both contests to get the victories.

The Blue Devils won 3-2 against the Lions, and 6-5 over the Eagles.

In the opener against the Lions, the Devils were down 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth, but then hit three straight doubles by Shelby Maze, Kristen Putnam and Bailey Murphy to score three times.

Lead-off batter Morgan Reed put Briarwood on the board in the first when she reached base on an error, stole second and came home on successive ground-outs. The Lions scored again in the fifth when Maleigh Miller scored on a Dee Simon ground-out.

Jordan's Natalie Johnsey pitched a one-hitter, striking out eight Lions in one of her best outings of the season.

Maze was 2-for-2 at the plate, and also reached on an error.
