GARDENDALE — Gardendale fell victim to its own pitchers – not because of their throwing, but because of fielding errors – as they lost 3-2 to Oak Grove in a fifth-place bracket semifinal game of the Jefferson County Schools Tournament.
Rocket pitchers committed three errors that allowed all three Tiger runs to score, twice in the third inning and once on the seventh on the go-ahead run.
The Rockets got their runs in the bottom of the first, with one of them coming on an RBI single by Colten Jay.
Gardendale had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh, with runners on the corners, two out and Joseph Calvert – the team's top hitter with a .479 average – at the plate. But Calvert struck out looking, and the game ended.
Calvert, who was also the staring pitcher, worked five innings for a no-decision outing. He struck out four and allowed two unearned runs on four hits. Zach Cupps took over in the sixth and got the loss; the winning Oak Grove run scored off his fielding error.
Jonah Todd pitched all seven innings for the Tigers, fanning six Rocket batters and allowing four hits. He also drove in one of his team's runs.
Gardendale (7-6) faces Corner at Hueytown in the seventh-place game Saturday morning.
