Pinson Valley’s boys soccer team has seen this show before, and it wasn’t any better the second time.
The No. 6 Indians were beaten Friday by fifth-ranked St. Paul’s 2-1 in a shootout in the AHSAA Class 5A semifinals — by the same team that took out Pinson in the same game last year.
This time around, the result was much tighter, as the two sides battled to a 1-1 draw after regulation and extra time.
Senior forward Hunter Middleton put the Indians ahead in the 52nd minute. But the Saints equalized in the 60th minute when Crawford Phillips scored on a header that got past Indians keeper Jaime Vargas.
With no more scoring in extra time, the two teams decided the game in penalty kicks, where the Saints scored four times to Pinson’s one. Giovanni Molina got the lone marker in the shootout.
Pinson Valley finishes the season with a 15-6-4 record.
