Jordan and Hayden softball, Pinson Valley baseball in first state rankings of season

The Alabama Sports Writers Association has released its first high school baseball and softball rankings of the season, and three local teams have cracked the top 10 in Class 5A.

In softball, Mortimer Jordan has been ranked fourth in the initial poll, and Hayden is 10th in 5A. And in baseball, Pinson Valley is ninth.

Jordan was just outside the rankings in 5A baseball as well; that determination was made before the Blue Devils lost to the Indians in the Jefferson County Schools tournament on Wednesday.

Two other softball teams were just outside the top 10 in their classes: Gardendale in Class 6A and Corner in 4A.

The weekly rankings are determined by input from sports writers at newspapers across the state, including The North Jefferson News. The rankings are released at 12:01 a.m. each Thursday.
