Pinson Valley's Nick Gibson named player of the week by sportswriters, AHSAA

PINSON — When you run for more than a quarter mile during a single football game, people all over take notice.

That is precisely what happened to Nick Gibson, the Pinson Valley running back who racked up 447 yards and six touchdowns in the team’s win over Mortimer Jordan last Friday night.

Gibson scored the “weekly double” of statewide high school football awards: the Spotlight Player of the Week from the Alabama High School Athletic Association, and the Offensive Player of the Week from the Alabama Sports Writers Association, the group which votes on the state’s weekly top-10 rankings.

The junior’s big night ranks fifth on the all-time single-game individual rushing record list, according to the AHSAA website.

Ironically, Gibson wasn’t going to go in for his last series of the night — he was understandably out of gas — until an assistant coach asked a reporter on the sideline how many yards the youngster had racked up. At the time it was 375 yards, so head coach Matt Glover sent Gibson back in to break the 400-yard mark, which he did easily with a long touchdown run for his sixth score of the night.

Afterward, Glover wasn’t even sure if Gibson’s total set a school record, much less ranking among the best ever in the state.

Gibson will travel with the Indians this Friday night to Walker, a team that was expected to vie for playoff status with Pinson Valley before they were banned from post-season play last week, a result of the well-publicized post-game brawl between the Vikings’ former head coach and an assistant coach from Cullman.
