HAYDEN — Mortimer Jordan locked up a berth in the Class 5A baseball playoffs, thanks to a doubleheader sweep at Hayden on Tuesday.

The Blue Devils won the opening game 9-4, and took the second contest 10-0 in six innings.

In the first game, shortstop Devlin Hodges smashed a two-run homer as part of a five-run rally in the third inning. Freshman center fielder Walker McCleney hit a bases-loaded triple, and designated hitter Brandon Spears was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Left fielder Michael Hoglan was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Cats.

Orion Recke (6-1) struck out nine Wildcat batters in the complete-game win. He allowed seven hits, two walks and two earned runs.  Josh Helms went all seven in the loss for Hayden, with seven earned runs.

In the nightcap, Jordan pitchers Garrett Suchey and Ty Miller combined to hold the hosts to two hits, and also accounted for much of the Devils’ offense.

Suchey, the starter, struck out eight in four innings of work, while Miller fanned five in two innings of relief for the Devils (29-5, 4-0 area).

Miller also went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in three runs, while Suchey was 2-for-4 with a double, scored two runs and batted in another.

Chris Whitt worked five innings for Hayden and allowed eight runs, but only three were earned as the Wildcat defense committed eight errors.

Luke Wall’s double was one of Hayden’s two hits.

The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Thursday with a single game between the two teams at Jordan on Thursday, but the schedule was flip-flopped because of the forecast of storms for Thursday.
