GARDENDALE — A four-run rally in the fifth inning helped Pelham seal a 6-0 shutout rad win at Gardendale in Friday baseball action.
The Panthers took the lead in the first inning, thanks to a misplayed fly ball in short right field that allowed lead-off hitter Fletcher Johnson to reach base. He scored on a single by Hunter Stovall. Johnson drove in another run with an RBI single in the second.
Pelham’s rally began when Rockets reliever Chris Walton came in for starting pitcher Carter Burns. Walton got in trouble early, walking four of his first five Panther batters, with two of them scoring on a passed ball and a wild pitch. Shortstop Jackson Pruitt drove in two more on a base hit.
Jack Pierce went the distance on the mound for Pelham, striking out eight while allowing four hits and four walks. He got out of a bases-loaded jam in the second inning by striking out Chris Blakey, his third punch-out of the inning.
Burns struck out four and gave up four hits and one earned run.
Sam Finnerty was 2-for-4 at the plate for Pelham.
