GARDENDALE —
New Gardendale girls basketball coach Amy Barnett got her tenure off to a good start Thursday night, as the Rockets rolled behind center Chelsey Deloney to a 49-40 win over Oak Mountain in their season opener.
The 6-foot-0 Deloney led the way with 22 points and eight rebounds as she established a presence under the boards. She got help from the Rockets other 6-footer, senior Chelsea Robinson, who chipped in 8 points and 6 boards.
Gardendale led from the start, opening with an 8-point run and never looking back.
“I’m very excited about our senior leadership. I thought we executed well, and did a great job of handling the ball,” Barnett said. “We’ve really worked a lot on developing team chemistry, but our senior leaderhip is really impressive and I’m just so proud of how they’re playing right now.”
Not everything was perfect in this first game, as Barnett felt their play under the boards still isn’t where it needs to be.
“Boxing out is one thing we have to work on. With our height, we should be dominating the boards,” Barnett said.
Taylor Dailry scored nine points and Lakeyisa Conner added seven for the Rockets (1-0).
Guard Allie Allers paced the Eagles (1-1) with 10 points.
The Rockets are off until Nov. 27, when they host Pell City.
