Twin brothers Hunter and Destin Davidson did much of the damage for Pinson Valley, as they came back from an early deficit to beat Gardendale 7-3 in the first round of pool play Monday in the Jefferson County Schools Baseball Tournament.
Hunter hit a solo homer in the third inning that just cleared the left-field fence. He later added a run-scoring double, while Destin was 2-for-3 at the plate. Designated hitter Baker Hodge also drove in a run for the Indians.
The Rockets got all three of their runs in the first inning, thanks in part to an RBI double by staring pitcher Joseph Calvert. The Tribe scored once in the top of the first to take the early advantage, then broke open for four runs in the third.
Starter Brent Stephens got the win on the mound, striking out five in four innings' work. Raul Tafoya finished off on the mound with three innings for Pinson. Calvert took the loss for Gardendale; he was pulled in the fifth inning after allowing six runs, though just two were earned.
Pinson Valley (5-3) hosts Minor on Tuesday afternoon, while Gardendale (7-5) welcomes Pleasant Grove in the second of three pool-play games.
