SPRINGVILLE — Mortimer Jordan put up 22 quick points in the first half, then had to hang on as Springville’s backup quarterback made things close at the end as the Blue Devils won a 22-19 road victory Friday.
Landon Smith scored twice on runs of 44 and two yards, and Yakeim Smith added a 1-yard touchdown run for Jordan.
Tigers starting quarterback Alex Conwell was knocked out of the game with an injury in the second quarter, but sophomore backup passer Adam Smith stepped in and nearly led the home team to a comeback.
Smith scored all three Tiger touchdowns on runs of one, two and three yards. The first came as time expired in the first half, and the last with 40 seconds left in the game.
But most of his damage was done in the middle of the field, as he completed 16 passes on 22 attempts. Most of those completeions were for double-digit gains, which moved the Tigers downfield in short order.
Springville’s momentum subsided, though, when a Smith pass was intercepted at the Joradn 10-yard line by Spencer Crane to end a crucial drive late.
Devils quarterback Devlin Hodges was 13-for-21 in passing for 176 yards. Smith finished the night with 16 completions in 22 attempts and one pick; Conwell was 5-for-8 with an interception before his injury.
Smith ran 75 yards on nine rushing attempts, and Trey Peters cought four passes from Hodges for 64 yards for the Devils.
Wes Cooper had 10 tackles, Caleb Foshee had nine and Zack Thrift also had nine plus an interception for Jordan.
The Devils and Tigers each go to 2-2 overall. Jordan is now 2-1 in Region 6 play, while Springville is 1-2.
