— Dallas Tidwell, the 6-foot-7 senior quarterback for Gardendale, has verbally committed to play for Troy University.

Tidwell, who had been recruited by a host of colleges, had offers from both Troy and from Mississippi State in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. He made his choice over the weekend.

The verbal commitment was confirmed by Rockets head coach Chris Fancher.

“Dallas is a good pickup for them,” Fancher said. “They like to throw the ball around a lot, and they like taller quarterbacks, so it’s a good fit. If Dallas hold up his end of the deal and works out like he should, then he will do very well. We’re all extremely proud of Dallas.”

Tidwell was the starter for the Rockets as a junior last season. He threw 109 completions in 205 attempts, with nine touchdowns and eight interceptions during their 5-5 season.

Tidwell will be able to sign a National Letter of Intent on National Signing Day, which is on February 2, 2011.

The Rockets open their 2010 season with Tidwell at the helm with a pre-season jamboree game at Driver Stadium, against Homewood on August 20.

The regular season officially starts the following week, as Gardendale travels to Hewitt-Trussville. Their home opener is September 10 against Carver.
