Boys basketball: Briarwood Christian 72, Locust Fork 48

LOCUST FORK — Kyle Hornbuckle did what he could. But against Briarwood Christian's stout defense in the lane and hot shooting touch from outside the 3-point arc, there was only so much the Locust Fork senior forward could do.

The Lions muscled their way to a convincing 72-48 win in the Hornets' boys basketball season opener.

Justin Brown got Briarwood (2-0) off to a fast start, scoring 13 points that included a pair of treys in the first quarter, which outscored the Hornets by himself. He finished with 26 points.

Up by 14 at halftime, the Lions turned up the defensive pressure in the third period, forcing Locust Fork to go four straight possessions without getting off a shot at one point.

Hornbuckle found himself in heavy traffic in the low post for much of the game, but still managed to score 29 points to lead all scorers.

"We showed our youth tonight," Locust Fork coach Brannon Smith said. "We're gonna get there in time, but we're young. We're gonna get there before the year's over, but we've got to peak at the right time."

John Laatsch added 16 points with three 3-pointers for Briarwood, and Sam Cargo scored 13.

The Hornets host J.B. Pennington on Tuesday.
