Boys area basketball tournaments: Carbon Hill 48, Corner 40

DORA — Corner led most of the way, but Carbon Hill came storming back late, then went on a 10-2 run in the last two minutes to secure a 48-40 victory in the Class 4A Area 8 boys basketball tournament first round Friday at Dora.

The Yellow Jackets last held a lead when Austin Sanford hit a basket with 2:56 left. After the Bulldogs took the lead back, Corner tied it with a pair of Zac Pate free throws at the 2:10 mark, but that was then end of it for the Jackets.

Blake Byrd led Corner with 14 points, and Sanford had 10.

For Carbon Hill (21-8), Gerald Smith had 14 points, all in the second half. Daniel Woodard scored seven of hits nine points in the second half as well.

Johnathan Bentley of The Daily Mountain Eagle in Jasper contributed to this report.
