Boys basketball: Mortimer Jordan 66, Corner 53

KIMBERLY — Mortimer Jordan tallied their 20th win of the season on senior night, as they beat Corner 66-53 Friday night in the Blue Devils’ regular-season finale.

Armed with speedy point guard Mark Louis, Jordan shifted into their up-tempo transition game to out-quick the Jackets and take the rubber match of the series. The two teams split victories in January.

“We’re at our best when we’re playing up-tempo,” said Jordan coach Lynn Elkins.

The Devils capitalized on their nine steals by pushing in transition and finding open looks from the outside. Jordan put in 7-of-10 3-pointers in the first half. The home iron was kind for the Devils, as they shot 57 percent from the floor in the opening two quarters.

“We’re not quite as good in the half court, but when we’re hitting our shots like that, we’re tough,” said Elkins.

Jordan (20-6) shut down two of the Jackets top scorers in the second half to secure the victory. Guard Blake Byrd, who scored nearly half of Corner’s first-half points, failed to score in the second. The Jackets usual workhorse down low, senior forward Austin Sanford, scored only four points all night.

Meanwhile, the home team found offense from several players. Louis, who finished with 20, fearlessly drove the lane all night. After effortlessly passing his defender and penetrating the paint, he either kicked out to an open shooter or took it upon himself to finish at the rim. Either way, it produced points.

Many times it was Connor Moon finding Louis’ dish. Moon shot 50 percent from 3-point range and ended the night with 11 points.

Ben Hardiman and Orion Recke combined for 17 Devils points.

Jordan finishes the regular season unbeaten on its home court. Now they look to build off their victory when they host the area tournament next week.

“We are the one-seed, so we are excited about our opportunity in the [area tournament],” said Elkins.
