Sabrina Knight scored a hat trick in regulation time, but Gardendale had to survive extra time and a penalty-kick shootout to defeat Clay-Chalkville 6-5 in girls soccer action Tuesday.
The Cougars tied the game late in the second half on a penalty kick, when the Rockets were called for a handball in the penalty area.
The teams played 10 minutes of extra time with no goals.
Mikaela Millwood, Knight and Kylie Echols scored in the shootout for Gardendale.
Kelsey Brumbeloe had 10 saves for the Rockets, including two in the shootout.
The two teams each have a game remaining against section leader Hewitt-Trussville to determine who gets the second playoff spot from the section. Gardendale is schedule to play the Huskies on Thursday, but that match is threatened by severe weather.
