SPRINGVILLE — Pinson Valley split a baseball doubleheader at Springville on Friday, falling in the opening game 3-1 but rebounding to take the nightcap 9-2.

With the win in the closing game, the Indians take the tiebreaker in the Class 5A Area 11 regular-season standings, after defeating the Tigers 10-0 on Tuesday. It also all but locks up a berth in the post-season for Pinson, as the Tigers lost two out of three to Moody. (The Indians and Blue Devils tangle next week.)

In the first game, Springville scored first with an RBI single by Perry Cancilla. They got what proved to be the winning run when Ingram Goolsby’s shot to left field was misplayed, allowing Alex Foster to come in.

Pinson got a run back in the sixth when Gracen Armstrong singled, stole second and scored on a Tyler Evans base hit to right field. But the Tigers went ahead by two in the bottom of the inning when Daniel Holly’s hit drove home Pierson Paddock.

Cancilla got the win on the mound, allowing just four Pinson hits. Bailey Chesser was tagged with the loss for the Indians, despite conceding just five hits while striking out four.

In the closing game, Pinson broke the game open with five runs in the top of the first, paced by a two-run double by Jason Little, followed by a Baker Hodge double that scored Little.

Zac Ray had a pinch-hit two-run single in the fifth, part of a three-run rally that all but put the game out of reach.

Brandon Eckmyre fanned nine Tiger batters while allowing four hits and one earned run, as he went the distance for the victory. Paddock, Springville’s starter, lasted 4-1/3 innings in the loss.

Hodge, Josh Hines and Austin Little all went 2-for-3 at the plate, and Evans was 2-for-5.

The twin-bill had been postponed from Thursday because of rain.
