BIRMINGHAM — Three local high school athletes are among the initial round of winners for the 2013 Bryant-Jordan Scholar-Athlete and Student Achievement awards.
Orion Recke and Amanda Dean of Mortimer Jordan, along with Blake Byrd of Corner, have been named regional finalists for the scholar-athlete and student achievement awards. Recke and Byrd were named in the scholar-athlete divisions in Class 5A and 4A, respectively, while Dean was picked for a student achievement award in 5A.
These winners get a $2,500 scholarship, and the chance for $3,000 more as statewide winners in each class, plus an additional $3,000 for overall statewide winners.
A total of 48 regional winners, eight in each of the six classifications in each of the two Bryant-Jordan categories, advanced from area competition and will be recognized at the 28th annual banquet, to be held April 8 at the Birmingham Sheraton Hotel. The class and overall winners will be announced at that banquet.
The regional winners were announced Tuesday by the Bryant-Jordan Foundation.
