HAYDEN — Hayden opened the defense of its Class 5A softball state championship in commanding fashion Tuesday, whipping Susan Moore 16-0 in five innings.
Sharley Miller and freshman Chloe Kirkland each smashed home runs for the Wildcats. Kirklnad also went 4-for-4 at the plate, while Evin Bibb was 4-for-5 with a double and scored three times; Kayla Byrd went 3-for-5.
Pitcher Katie Parr allowed just one hit; the only trouble she faced was in the third inning when the Bulldogs loaded the bases on an error, a walk and a hit batsman, but Parr got out of the jam with two fly-outs and a strikeout.
Hayden (1-0) travels to Good Hope for a doubleheader on Thursday.
