KIMBERLY —
Mortimer Jordan struggled against Brian Browning, the ace pitcher for 10th-ranked Homewood, as the Patriots prevailed 6-1 Tuesday afternoon.
The Blue Devils scattered seven hits against Browning, and scored thir lone run in the fourth inning on two passed balls that brought Garrett Suchey home from second base. The Patriots got out of the jam, though, with a fly-out, throw-out double play.
Browning struck out 10 Blue Devil batters, and gave up two walks.
Browning helped his own cause in the first inning with the bases loaded and two puts, when he hit a double to score all three runners. He was caught trying to stretch it out to a triple for the third out, but the damage was done.
Jordan starter Orion Recke had issues early depite allowing just four hits; he was replaced after 3-1/3 innings after two runs scored and two others reached base on errors. Nathan Stover finished the job, helped out by an unassisted double play from Suchey at first base. Stover went on to allow two hits and no additional runs.
Browning was 2-for-2 for the day. Left fielder Jack Shelley had a double, went to third on a ground-out and scored on a passed ball.
Devils designated hitter Wes Crawford was 2-for-3 and also stole a base.
Jordan, which has lost three of its last four after a winning 12 of its first 13 games, plays at Dora in a doubleheader on Wednesday.
