CARBON HILL — Jackson Tavel tallied 13 strikeouts, as Corner started slow but finished strong for 15-1 Class 4A area win at Carbon Hill on Friday.
The Bulldogs scored in the bottom of the first inning on an error, but that was the only mark they made on the scoreboard, as the Yellow Jackets' bats got going in the third inning with three unearned runs. They drove Carbon Hill starting pitcher Davis Davis out after five innings with seven runs on eight hits. Meanwhile, Tavel cruised along, yielding just three hits and one walk.
The Jackets finished the Dogs off with a six-run rally in the seventh, keyed by three RBI doubles by Devne Daniel, Chase Best and Brylon Brakefield.
Best was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Brakefield's two-run double in the seventh was his only hit in three at-bats; he also scored a run.
The Jackets (9-11, 1-0 area) and Bulldogs face off again on Saturday, this time at Corner.
