KIMBERLY — Eighth-ranked Mortimer Jordan clinched its Class 5A Area 12 baseball championship with a 13-5 victory over visiting Hayden on Thursday.
Right fielder Wes Crawford provided much of the offense for the Blue Devils, bringing in two runs on an inside-the-park home run and another run on a double.Third baseman Nathan Stover was 2-for-3 with a triple, a double, an RBI, a stolen base and three runs scored. Second baseman Austin Davis was 2-for-2 and scored a run.
Dylan Burgett (4-2) got the victory on the mound, allowing six hits and three runs, two earned. He struck out three Wildcat batters. Hayden starter Jackson Kirk lasted just a third of an inning; reliever Elijah Dodd took the loss in 4-2/3 innings, giving up 10 runs on 12 hits.
Chris Whitt was 2-for-4 for the Cats, driving in one run and scoring two.
The Blue Devils (27-10, 4-0 area) have won 14 of their last 15 games. They host Brookwood in a doubleheader Saturday at 11 a.m. They will face either Moody or Pinson Valley in the first playoff round April 18.
Hayden still has an outside shot at the post-season, but they must defeat Walker twice in three games next Tuesday and Thursday.
