NJN 2014 All-Star Wrestling Team: Top honors for 'Tank"

NORTH JEFFERSON — His teammates and coaches call him “Hank the Tank.”

We call him the best wrestler in north Jefferson and southwest Blount counties.

Hank Turner, the 138-lb. state champion from Pinson Valley, compiled a 60-4 record this season, and is our selection as The North Jefferson News 2014 Wrestler of the Year.

Turner’s closest competition was the teammate who won his state championship just minutes after Turner did, on the same mat at the AHSAA State Championships in Huntsville. Adam Crocker’s gold medal at 145 pounds, capping a 49-8 season, earns him runner-up honors.

The two champions helped push the Indians to fourth place in the team standings, highest among local teams.

The 2014 NJN All-Star Wrestling Team is chosen by associated editor Robert Carter, with input from local coaches. Medalists at the state finals are automatically named to the team. Members are chosen without regard to weight class; some weights may have multiple awards, while others may have none at all.
