HOOVER — Hayden opened play in the Spain Park Invitational softball tournament with a pair of shutout wins Friday.
The Wildcats defeated Vestavia Hills 2-0 in five innings, then took down Grissom 1-0 in four innings. Both games were played under time limits.
In the win over the Rebels, Sharley Miller drove in the go-ahead run in the fourth inning on a single that sent home Brooke Meadows. It was Meadows who returned the favor when he hit in the fifth scored an insurance run.
Miller struck out eight Vestavia batters while giving up just two hits.
Chloe Kirkland was 2-for-3 with a double for the Cats.
In the second game, Katie Parr got the win with six strikeouts against just two hits over the Tigers. Tabetha Ausborn scored the game's only run in the third inning, when she reached on a walk and stole her way around to the plate.
Hayden (6-0) was held to just one hit, a lead-off single in the first by Kayla Byrd.
Play continues for the Cats on Saturday, with the day's first game against McAdory.
