MONTGOMERY — They had to hang on for dear life, but Mortimer Jordan has won its way into a sixth consecutive AHSAA Class 5A state softball championship game, thanks to a 9-7 victory over St. Paul's Episcopal.
Eighth-grade pitcher Bailey Murphy started running out of gas after the Blue Devils built up a big lead. Shelby Maze came in to relieve her in the circle, but after the Saints cut the lead to 9-7 and had the bases loaded with two out in the seventh. Murphy was brought back in to get the last out -- a ground-ball force out at third.
Jordan now plays fourth-ranked Chelsea in the championship game, beginning shortly. Chelsea defeated Jordan 5-4 in an 11-inning marathon Thursday.
