Mortimer Jordan’s boys basketball team has a couple of things this season that it hasn’t often had before: a deep bench, and the speed and size to make defensive pressure work.
Both were in evidence Wednesday night at the Hanceville Thanksgiving Tournament, as the Blue Devils defeated the host Bulldogs 66-50.
Four Jordan players scored in double figures, as the Devils jumped out to an early 13-1 lead and never looked back, despite a couple of times when the Dogs looked as if they might make a run.
Point guard Mark Louis led the way with 16 points, shooting 5-for-8 (63 percent) from the floor with a couple of 3-point shots. He also had four steals and dished out nine assists.
Center Ben Hardiman scored 12, hitting four of five shots under the basket and 5-of-7 overall, including a trey; he also had seven rebounds. Orion Recke and Seth Barnett added 10 points each for Jordan (2-0).
Brontae Harris, Dant’e Reese and Chris Smith each scored 12 points for Hanceville (3-1).
In other tournament games:
Cold Springs 55, Corner 46: The Yellow Jackets ran out to a lead of as many as 10 points, but the Eagles came back midway through the third quarter, as Corner’s shooting touch went cold in the other winner’s bracket semifinal game.
Blake Byrd scored 20 points, 11 of them in the first quarter alone and nine of 3-point shots, and Zac Pate scored 14 with a trio of 3-pointers, but the two players were held to just seven points between them in the fourth period.
Chayse Elliott led all scorers with 25 points for Cold Springs (6-0); he was perfect in eight free-throw attempts. Triston Chambers added 20 points, including four treys.
The Eagles and Jordan will face off in the tournament championship game on Friday night, while the Jackets play Hanceville in the third-place game.
Good Hope 59, Hayden 53: The Wildcats ran out to a quick lead off the opening tip, but could not hang on down the stretch as they remain winless in three games.
Poor free-throw shooting was part of Hayden’s downfall, as they went 12-for-29 (41 percent) at the line against the Raiders’ 21-for-31 (68 percent).
Center Parker Duncan scored 20 points for the Wildcats (0-3), and guard Houston Launius added 13, including a pair of 3-point goals.
Andrew Cofer had 17 points and Eli Marty 13 for the Raiders (1-5).
Hayden was supposed to face St. Bernard Prep in the seventh-place game Friday, but the Saints bowed out and the Wildcats will have the rest of the holiday period off.
