Mortimer Jordan started off its boys basketball season with a dominating 56-23 win over Good Hopein the first round of the 30th annual Hanceville Thanksgiving Tournament at Wallace State’s Drake Coliseum.
The Blue Devils size on the inside and speed on the outside were too much for the Raiders to handle, as 12 minutes elapsed before they could score from the field. All of their baskets came from outside the 3-point arc; Good Hope did not record a 2-point goal all night.
On the other hand, 3-point shooting was about the only really bad part of Jordan’s effort, as they shot just 1-for-19 (6 percent) outside the arc.
“We got a win, and we played hard on defense and the press, even though we didn’t shoot very well at all. We had some looks and good shot selection, but they just didn’t fall,” coach Lynn Elkins said. “Sometimes you come into a big gym like this and your depth perception is off.”
Eleven of Jordan’s 13 players scored in the game. Ben Hardiman and Seth Barnett led the way with 10 points each, and Orion Recke — a late addition to the Devils roster, after he originally decided to concentrate just on baseball — scored, eight, including the lone 3-pointer.
Barnett also pulled down seven rebounds.
Jordan will face the host team in the semifinals Wednesday night at 7:15.
In other first round games at Hanceville:
Corner 74, St. Bernard’s Prep 23: The Yellow Jackets completely outmanned and outgunned the small prep school from Cullman, shutting the Saints out until late in the first quarter.
Blake Byrd led Corner (2-0) with 14 points, including a pair of threes, and Zac Pate added 13 as all 11 players scored for coach Billy Conner.
The Jackets will face Cold Springs in the first semifinal game, scheduled for 6:30 Wednesday.
Cold Springs 73, Hayden 36: The rebuilding struggles continued for the Wildcats in their first-round contest, as the Eagles bombarded them from outside, scoring 14 buckets from 3-point land.
Layne Rice led Cold Springs with 22 points, including six treys. Chayse Elliott and Triston Chambers scored 14 points each.
Houston Launius led Hayden (0-2) with 12 points, including three 3-point shots.
Hayden will play St. Bernard's at 3:30 in the consolation bracket.
