NORTHPORT — “Good gracious!”

Tabernacle Christian head coach Wayne Dabbs was having to search through all the big numbers that his Torches put up in their 54-8 drubbing of North River Christian in 8-man action Friday, bumping their record to a perfect 7-0 for the season.

Finally, he simply turned around and asked his team, “Guys, I’m missing a touchdown. Who scored that last one?”

That would be JoJo Zassoda, who put points on the board along with Will Miller and Tristan Castro.

But the big night belonged to Justin Sims, who scored three long rushing touchdowns and then returned an interception 60 yards for a score.

The host Chargers got on the scoreboard early in the first quarter, but that’s all the offense they could muster, as Tabernacle scored all 54 of its points by halftime.

“We came out a little sluggish in the first quarter,” Dabbs said. We were going through the motions early, and they scored on their first drive.”

But that’s all North River did, and as a consequence the second half was played as two eight-minute “hot clock” periods.

Sims totaled 170 yards on just six carries, including touchdown runs of 60, 45 and 40 yards. His interception return went for 60 yards and a score.

Castro had 93 yards on three rushes, most of it on a 70-yard ramble for a touchdown.

Miller’s scoring run went for 30 yards, one of his three carries on the night.

Tabernacle was content to keep the ball on the ground almost all night, but Sims was a perfect 5-for-5 in passing, two of those on two-point conversions.

The win locks up the top seed and the regular-season championship in the Christian Football Association standings for the Torches. They will close out their CFA schedule with a home game next week against New Life Christian of Millbrook.
