HAYDEN — Hayden has taken the upper hand in a three-way battle for the Class 5A Area 12 lead, as they defeated seventh-ranked Curry 2-0 in softball action Thursday.
Both runs scored on errors for the No. 4 Wildcats. Leadoff hitter Meleah Hargett came home in the first inning on an error after she took a base on balls, and then moved to third on consecutive ground-outs. Katie Parr got the insurance run in the fourth inning after getting on board with a base hit; she came home on an overthrow at third base.
Hayden pitcher Caitlin Kirkland was not overpowering, as she tallied just two strikeouts. One of those got her out of a bases-loaded jam in the first, however. She scattered four hits and yielded two walks.
Yellow Jacket pitcher Ashlee Swindle allowed five hits to go with three strikeouts.
Parr was 2-for-3 at the plate, and Alyssa Phillips was 1-for-2 with a double.
The Area 12 battle continues Monday as the Cats host Walker, then head to Mortimer Jordan on Tuesday.
