Baseball: Mortimer Jordan 5-10, Oak Grove 3-2

KIMBERLY — Mortimer Jordan started off its 2014 season on the right foot, sweeping their traditional opening-day doubleheader by scores of 5-3 and 10-2 on Monday.

The week of missed practices didn't seem to faze the Blue Devils, especially sophomore Walker McCleney. The center fielder/pitcher was 3-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in the opening game, then was 1-for-2 with a two-run double and two runs scored in the nightcap.

McCleney also pitched two innings of setup relief, coming in for winning starter Taylor Goodwin, who threw four innings of two-hit shutout baseball. Wes Crawford got the save, working a perfect seventh inning.

Shortstop Dalton Hudson hit a run-scoring double, and third baseman Nathan Stover was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Austin Lawrence gave up seven hits in five innings for the loss for the Tigers.

In the second game, The Devils took advantage of six Oak Grove errors.

Goodwin, as the designated hitter, smacked a two-run double in the first inning. Catcher Brandon Couch was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, and Hudson scored twice.

Starter Dylan Jones got the win with four innings' work, giving up both Oak Grove runs and three hits while striking out six. Relievers Andrew Warren and Hunter Cornelius did not allow a base hit.

Jordan travels to Springville for a doubleheader on Tuesday.
