ASWA Polls: Jordan tops 5A softball, Corner third in 4A

The Alabama Sports Writers Association softball polls have started the 2010 season much as they finished in 2009.

Mortimer Jordan continues to occupy the top spot in the Class 5A poll, just as they did all of last season and most of 2008. The Blue Devils sported an 11-0 record as the poll was compiled on Tuesday morning. They won their 12th game later that day over Tuscaloosa County, who themselves are ranked tenth in Class 6A.

The Devils’ state-record winning streak currently stands at 57 games, going into a game against unranked Oak Mountain Friday night in the Hoover Round Robin Tournament. (That game ended after press time.)

Meanwhile, Corner also starts off the year high in the polls, ranked third after finishing second at last year’s state tournament.

The Yellow Jackets have a 5-4 record going into the Wallace State Tournament in Cullman this weekend. Most of those losses are against larger schools, with an extra-inning defeat coming at the hands of Sumiton Christian, ranked second in Class 3A.

In baseball, no local teams are ranked.
