PELHAM — “They’re one of the best teams in the state. That’s what we want to be.”
Gardendale coach Pat Keedy was somewhat philosophical after his Rockets were shutout by Pelham in both ends of a doubleheader Saturday.
Junior pitcher Trevor Fitts gave Gardendale fits in the opening game, striking out 13 Rockets — including a streak of six K’s — and allowing a single hit to Cody Belcher in 1 10-0, six-inning decision. Belcher’s lone base hit kept Fitts from throwing a perfect game.
In the closing game, the Panthers’ Tripp Martin fanned 10 Rockets while scattering six hits in a 7-0 Pelham victory.
Belcher was 2-for-3 to lead the Rockets.
The losses snapped an eight-game winning streak for Gardendale, which included a 4-1 win at Guntersville on Friday night.
Mortimer Jordan 4-6, Hayden 2-7 (second game 8 innings): The Blue Devils and Wildcats wrapped up their season series by splitting a Saturday doubleheader at Hayden.
Jesse Stanley pitched a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts in the first game, as the Blue Devils’ two runs in the top of the seventh were needed to overcome two by the Wildcats for the 4-2 win.
Stanley was 2-for-3 hitting with an RBI. Josh Grooms was 2-for-4 and scored a run.
In the nightcap, the Wildcats scored in the bottom of the eighth to take the victory in extra innings.
