Heather Anderson struck out 12 Gardendale batters, including eight of the first nine, to lead Corner to a 3-1 over the Rockets in Tuesday softball action.
Anderson had a perfect game through five innings, but the Rockets scored on a bunt single and run-scoring double in the sixth.
Kayla Estes had a double and a triple for Corner, and Lindsey Cannon had a run-scoring double.
Mortimer Jordan 10, Tuscaloosa County 4: Pitcher Blair Johnson got into trouble early, spotting the Wildcats four runs in the first with two singles, a walk and two Blue Devil fielding errors.
But Johnson settled down from there, both in the circle and at the plate, as she held Tuscaloosa County scoreless the rest of the way and drove in four runs of her own.
The Devils (12-0) took the lead in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles by Johnson and Hillary Hardiman.
Jordan broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth when the Wildcat pitching staff walked three straight batters, followed by a two-run double by Johnson. A passed ball brought Danae Hays in, then Heather Parker’s double to left drought home Johnson for the fifth run of the frame.
Johnson scattered three hits and struck out four. Only one of the Tuscaloosa runs was earned.
Hayden wins Fairview tournament: The Wildcats swept through last weekend’s Cullman County Umpires Association Tournament at Fairview, beating Holly Pond 4-1 in Saturday’s championship game.
Hayden beat Holly Pond 4-3 in Friday pool play. Saturday saw an 11-2 win over Vinemont 11-2, and an 8-0 shutout of Fairview in pool play, followed by a 6-4 defeat of Vinemont in the semifinals.
Jordan wins Spain Park tournament: Blair Johnson hit five home runs in six games, as the Blue Devils swept through the Spain Park Tournament last weekend.
Jordan had to withstand a late three-run rally by Bob Jones in the last inning of the final game, but held on to win 6-5.
The Devils also defeated John Carroll Catholic 12-0, Hewitt-Trussville 6-1, Gardendale 13-1, Dothan 5-1 and Sumiton Christian 11-1.
Johnson and Heather Parker had three pitching wins each.
