Eighth-grade pitcher Ashlee Swindle struck out seven Hayden batters, as Curry defeated the Wildcats 3-1 in a first-round game in the Class 5A Area 11 Tournament at Mortimer Jordan on Tuesday.
Hayden outhit the Jackets 7-6, but left nine runners on base, six of them in scoring position.
Designated player Brooke Meadows, also an eighth-garder, hit a bloop single over the shortstop's head that brought home Kayla Byrd in the sixth inning for the Wildcats' only run. Lead-off batter Kaci Jinright was 3-for-4, all singles.
Carlee Richardson's sacrifice fly scored Ella Banks to put the Jackets' first run on the board in the third inning. Curry also scored on bases-loaded walk in the fourth.
Hayden pitcher Caitlin Kirkland struck out five.
"We had seven hits and left nine runners on. We just could not get timely hits," Hayden coach John Simmons said. "But if you don;t take advantage of opportunities, you don't get the job done. They're solid team, and they aren;t going to give up stuff for free. They earned it."
Curry will play Jordan in Thursday's winners' bracket game at 4 p.m., followed by Hayden and Walker in the losers' bracket game. The winner of Hayden-Walker will play the loser of Jordan-Curry at 8.
