Hayden came up just short of first-place Dora at last weekend’s Blue Devil Invitational at Moody.
The Wildcats finished with 170 team points, second to the Bulldogs with 188. Gardendale finished fourth behind Clay-Chalkville, and Fultondale placed eighth in a tight bunch with Thompson, Pell City and Center Point.
For Hayden, Hunter Flowers won the 113-lb. class with a pin over Thompson’s Joseph Mayhall in the finals, and Dylan Putnam won at 160 with a 10-5 decision over Nick Weldon of Clay-Chalkville.
Hayden also had second-place finishes by William Witcher at 220, Tray Moore at 152 and Chase Johnson at 170. Parker Sims took third at 138, as did Anthony Scott at 182.
Daniel Adkins won the heavyweight class for Gardendale with a pin over Zach Polling of Russell County. Drew Smith won top honors at 170, winning 10-0 by major decision over Hayden’s Johnson. Matt Robles placed second at 195, and Blake Belcher (126) and Chase Downer (160) took third in their weights for the Rockets.
Fultondale had only one wrestler place in the top three of his class, but he did so with authority. Dylan Trice won at 106 pounds with three straight pins, finishing off Jacob Megois of Thompson on the finals.
